Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan composed a noble peace prize speech, The United Nations in the 21st Century. Kofi Annan dedicated his life to the UN. What struck me as the most important is the way Annan starts his speech. “We have entered the third millennium through a gate of fire. If today, after the horror of 11 September, we see better, and we see further— we will realize that humanity is indivisible.” Annan starts a very powerful speech mostly about the UN, but he doesn’t even mention the UN in his introduction. The speech was given roughly before the terrorists attacks of 9- 11. This influences his tone and the way he addresses his audience. After displaying the deadliest century in human history, Annan introduces the UN, the organization that is going to enlighten our future. Let us look passed the grieving world and look vividly about bringing peace and prosperity to the future. “. . . the leaders of the world came together at mid-century to unite the nations as never before.” The UN made it possible for nations to look beyond differences and see every individual for its worth. The UN brings to mind the need to make laws stronger, help the needy, conserve our resources, and maintain equal rights for all individuals. The UN is trying to pull the nations of the world together to make peace and seek a better future, one that does not contain the conflict of war.

Since 2001, the UN has promoted peace throughout different parts of the world. The UN is committed to helping underdeveloped countries and preventing wars. The world is still dangerous and at war, but the UN is giving mighty efforts to arouse peace to many more conflicted places on earth.

  2. After such destruction, I feel like it is time for some peace in the world, and Darfur is a good place start. There has been so much violence there in recent years, and it is good to see the achievements the UN has been able to make there.
