Exploration 7

The speech that struck me as the most important was that of the son of Aung San Suu Kyi. She was under house arrest because she tried to make a change that would improve life for everyone in Burma. This shows that the situation was ongoing, making this speech even more important. This speech thanks those who are fighting for what they believe in, and inspires more people to do so. In this speech her son says, “We must also remember that the lonely struggle taking place in a heavily guarded compound in Rangoon is part of the much larger struggle, worldwide, for the emancipation of the human spirit from political tyranny and psychological subjection.” This quote points out that the situation in Burma is not the only one of its kind, and this speech applies to the whole world.

Since this speech was given, Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from house arrest. This happened after Burma, now Myanmar, staged its first election in 20 years, although this poll has been considered undemocratic and only confirms the junta’s continued control.

  1. People hate change. Especially the people who gained their power because of force. and even though we have advanced in time, they try and save the same old tactics of controlling people; fear of death etc.

This is why i believe they locked her down. People dont like to change what works, even if the things that work only affect a very slim part of the population in a good way.

  4. She had a lot to say, and people didnt want to hear it. It was amazing that after all that time being under house arrest she was still very inspiring for others.

  5. I think she's right that she did not neccessarily have to speak to make a impact. It is inspiring to know she had a lot to say and people did not care.

I liked that she said "I was not supposed to communicate with anybody outside, so I didn’t actually talk to them,” she added. “But I smiled at them.”

  7. I hope that Aung San Suu Kyi's story helps motivate other able people in countries in similar circumstances as Burma to step up and make a difference as Aung did.

  8. This speech stuck out to me the most because she won the Nobel Peace Prize while she was under house arrest.

  9. She is a hero because she stood her ground and was not going to let house arrest stop her from making her country more democratic.
