Clearly there was a lot of turmoil in Burma in 1991. Aung San was put on house arrest for attempting to pursue Human rights and Democracy through non-violent acts. She was under house arrest during the award ceremony, making her daughter have to accept and give a speech in her name, that is crazy. The quote I chose is an optimistic quote at the end. Her son says, "The lessons of the past will not be forgotten, but it is our hope for the future that we celebrate today" (Aung San 634). This quote looks at the brighter of two sides in the turmoil of Burma. They celebrate today because change will come if they keep striving, but also to not forget how far they have come and what they have learned from it. This shows that no matter how down a culture can be, human will can be extremely tenacious in overcoming obstacles to reach a positive outcome.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in November 13th, 2010. From 1991-2010 she was on and off of house arrest and unable to talk with her party. Just reported recently by Rueters, "Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi might stand for parliament in an upcoming by-election after her party re-registers itself to enter politics, a party spokesman said" (Rueters.com). This was recently posted on October 29th. So overall it seems as much progress has been made in Burma with Human Rights and Democracy.

  1. It's good that Myanmar is moving towards a better democracy without the fear of violence from the military. They still have a long way to go, though, and they will need the support of other countries and the U.N.

  2. It is crazy she was one house arrest so long!, The quote is very inspiring. No matter what was happening she never let her head down and she kept on fighting for what she wanted.
