Mike Ackerman

Hello my name is Mike Ackerman and I am a very nice person. I like long walks on the beach and long meaningful conversations. I am majoring in microbiology, and I like to read science fiction books. My favorite book is either The Breakfast of Champions or The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy.

“Say just one more word, one goddamn word, and I’ll shut you up!” This is a very powerful threat from a drunken man that Scott Sanders had to call a father. The reason that I believe that he wrote this story is to warn people of the negative effects that alcohol can have on a person. He wanted people to know that if you drink in mass quantities all the time it can really hurt the people that are around you and the people that you love. What struck me the most about this story was the fact that the family did not want to talk about it even to each other. Most people get better by discussing their problems and don’t bottle it up to hurt them later. It is saddening that something so bad can happen that it would silence a whole family.

  1. Imagine the millions of other families out there...all bottled up and letting this addiction tear them apart.

  2. I agree with you, I think he possibly wrote this essay as a way of showing people the harmful effects of drinking a lot and the seriousness of alcolholism. And not talking about the situation is a very interesting way to deal with the 'family problem'. But it is one to which I can relate, and I'm sure other people deal with their problems by pretending like it's not happeneing. It's definitely not always the best way to deal with things, especially with something as serious as alcohol addiction.
